Dr. Samuel R. Laycock Memorial Award
Dr. Samuel R. Laycock spent his boyhood on a farm in Ontario. It was also in rural Ontario that, at the age of 16, he taught his first group of students. During his term as Dean of Education at the University of Saskatchewan, from 1947 to his retirement in 1953, he laid the foundation for his leadership in the education of exceptional children. As a clinical psychologist, he counseled parents and was deeply interested in all children. His leadership at the local, provincial, national and international levels was demonstrated through personal contact. His establishment and support of various organizations, lecture tours and his writings, which consisted of many book and hundreds of articles, are testament to his educational leadership. One of the organizations strongly supported by Dr. Laycock was Home and School. He was the first president of the Saskatchewan Federation and was President of the Canadian Home and School & Parent Teacher Federation from 1945 to 1947. In 1958 he was made Honorary President of the Canadian Federation, a position he held until his death in 1971 at the age of 80.
Dr. Laycock is remembered as a person who lived his life for children. The Canadian Home & School Federation has chosen to honour his memory with presentation of a special award plaque at each CHSF Annual General Meeting.
